By "OS not recognizing links" I was thinking of the way there have been isolated incidents of xdg-open (on linux) getting badly configured and not passing the link properly to the browser. I myself have one system that still thinks Chrome is installed and tries and fails to pass all software links to it.

I was, after all, answering in reference to the calibre prompt not opening the download page.

Perhaps the Windows equivalent to xdg-open is suffering similar problems?
