Well, you definitely don't on the MS Windows side of things. I haven't tested it on a Mac, specifically. There are huge repositories of pre-compiled packages for ActiveState (and any other Perl that supports the PPM format, for that matter, though I think the only other one is StrawberryPerl), and that's what I use. I don't even have a functioning compiling environment set up at the moment on my Windows box, but GTK works fine.
