Lord Peter is trying to get information from an isolated farmer (Grimethorpe) and is talking absolute piffle in the way he does. Inspired.
I was remembering a bit mistakenly. I actually read Clouds of Witness last year and had seen the series earlier, although most of the books I had read first. Your mention of Grimethorpe made me remember how some things seemed the same although absolutely different in a strange but charming way. BBC does book adaptations exceedingly well usually. Another example in a similar vein is Peter Davison as Margery Allingham's Campion. Overall I'll take the books but the series is delightful.
