And so I did, and unfortunately it failed to really impress me. A decent enough children's ghost/horror story, but the characters were flat and at no point did it properly grip me. I hope the sequel will be more interesting, now that the world-building's done and out of the way.
After
Shiverton Hall, I read Kim Harrison's
For a Few Demons More (the fifth in the Rachel Morgan / Hollows series). I have a number of problems with this series, mostly to do with the inordinate number of men Rachel seems to drool over (not that I have a problem with a woman finding many men attractive, but it's seriously hard for me to believe that
all the men she meets are attractive enough to remark on as such), and with the writing (epithets are one of my pet peeves and there's a lot of that in this series), but something about the books is just so ... well, if the book mentioned above failed to hook me, this series, in spite of its faults,
has hooked me.
I am glad I've picked up the first 11 books on various sales, as I very much intend to keep reading.
Yesterday I finished
A Duty to the Dead by Charles Todd (first book in the Bess Crawford series) and - once I'd decided I can suspend my disbelief regarding some plot conveniences - enjoyed it very much. It's not a perfect book, but the atmosphere, writing and characters worked for me.
And now, since I have some catching up to do after a month of little reading time, I'm going for a double in my this year's sub-challenges (two of which were "read at least 12 paper books" and "read at least 12 Doctor Who books") and I'm reading a paperback of Dan Abnett's
The Silent Stars Go By, an Eleventh Doctor, Amy & Rory adventure. Enjoying it a great deal so far.
