That's true. Most of them do it by tapping on the column header, but at least people are used to the concept. I hadn't thought of that.

How about instead of just an arrow you use something like:

for series. I don't know what to use for date.

Having typed that all out, maybe its not worth the effort. People who do complex sorts will remember where they are and people who don't can just hit the sort again.
