Do your buy now thing in a separate tab for each book you want to buy, select Paypal or credit card on each, then apply your promo code to each book, before completing the purchase. Complete each purchase one after the other, should accept them all.
I don't know the difference between old and new checkouts, though, so would need someone else to explain that. I only get one variety of checkout on Chrome or Firefox.

16 books with one code?!
I'm using old checkout, and I was successful only
once in purchasing 2 (or was it 3?) books with the same code. All the other times I tried were unsuccessful.

Well...one good thing about the old checkout is that we can see the download option at a glance.
