That's odd, there's almost always something to clean up - in temp, recycle bin, windows update leftovers etc. I don't have vista but IIRC it's not too different from Win7.
Can you post the error details and how much space is windows reporting is free on the system partition.
Most calibre error messages can be copied to the clipboard, eg
