I know if I buy an e-book from Amazon it's most likely genuine, but the vast majority of the e-books I'm reading are from people who have just written their own e-books and released it online without a publisher at all. Many are free e-books. A lot of the e-books I'm reading now are educational so I want to know that what I'm reading is genuine.
So he/she is used to getting free, self-published non-fiction books and she/he is looking for more of the same, with the caveat that his/her paranoia won't let her/him sleep at night for the fear of altered books. He/She wants some *proof* that the books he/she is getting aren't going to corrupt his/her mind.

So, I agree Helen. I think that EbookNovice is just what his/her username implies. Unfortunately for them, there is no answer. Like conspiracy theorists, all answers are suspect.
