You said books, not book. This is happening in multiple books? Are they coming from the same source? Amazon? Elsewhere?
I have had Topaz formatted ebooks from Amazon that had funky text. I've also had books from other sources that had odd text issues.
However, the lines problem does not sound normal. I'd do the factory reset, see if that does anything, and if not get a replacement.
