If you have access to one, can you check if an 'official' Active Content from the Kindle Store actually runs? (I hope there are still free ones out there).
Barring that, the system logs should shed some more light on this:
Enter ;dm in the Homescreen's search bar: instead of launching the Search result page, it'll churn for a while, and dump 4 or 5 fives log files in the documents folder. PM me those.
