The TV show is more than an adaptation of the books in this instance. It is in the process of peeling off the series's skin and wearing it like a coat. It will
become the original and whatever George decides to scribble from here on out will be the adaptation. He's given away the rights to present the finale of his opus to HBO. They're not going to wait around for him.
Other than manga/anime, can anyone think of another book series whose TV adaptation blew past it and aired the finale that the author of the books hadn't even penned yet, and was--in fact--still busy working on doing?
It's a weird scenario playing out.
