I seem to recall the same arguments being made when people predicted they'd drop DRM from their MP3s, and I'd wager they sell a lot more music now than they did then.
Like I said, I could be wrong...but I've gone from buying loads of physical books from Amazon to buying almost zero ebooks from them, and those are just the ones that are Kindle exclusives. If Amazon were willing to sell me EPUBs, especially without DRM, they'd have a good chance at regaining that lost business. I still use their wish lists to track book releases, but I make all my
purchases elsewhere.
