I think it's a lot more likely that Amazon will drop MOBI and embrace EPUB than that everyone else will drop EPUB. Historically, it's the single-vendor formats that tend to die off, slain by the more open ones.

I also think that if Amazon does switch to EPUB, they'll find a way to cut Adobe out of the loop. Either they'll drop DRM completely (as they did with MP3s some years ago) or they'll make their own version...and the way the wind is blowing, I'd predict the former. Even if they do allow Adobe DRM, they'll shift the cost to the publisher/author as a premium feature.

Of course, I could be wrong. I've got a stack of SyQuest cartridges that sit on my shelf and mock me in the dead of night...
