By default, the file window appears as a "Directory Browser". Instead of just providing a list of files, it focuses on navigating the directory hierarchy. This is necessary because NeXTSTEP systems have a huge number of files and folders with deep hierarchies.
Each "Directory Browser" window has four columns. Each displays the files and folders located in the selected directory. This lets you navigate deep inside a set of nested folders without visibly loosing sight of where you were [came from]. Double clicking a folder opens a new ["Directory Browser"] file window.
