I enjoyed this review. I'm wondering if something he mentions - that initially the series was more noirish and has evolved into something "more" - is why I became somewhat disenchanted with it. It was turning into something more like high fantasy. I loved the "urban fantasy" part of it, and even when I was reading every book the day they came out, "Summer Knight" was my least favorite book.
I remember thinking at the time that now that he had an audience, he could write the high fantasy he really preferred to write.
It's been years since I read these...so I picked up Storm Front to do a re-read to refresh my memory. But I can't read them one after the other - I remember that almost every book ended in a way that cost Harry more and more. I think if I read them one-after-the-other, I'd just end up depressed and give up.
