If the device is plugged in and you select usb enable.sh or usb disable.sh on the Kobo, there should something change in the list of usb-controllers. I just presupposed that you are a windows user. On linux it should be similar, I guess.

I can connect in nickel but not in startmenu, however I will investigate it further to see what is happening underneath.
