Heck even my beloved "Angelique" series is not for the faint of heart. More harem in that one too among lots of other stuff.
I read that when I was 11-13 or so. Those were written in the 60's though. Also not really romance.

I have to be in the mood for them. I am a big mood reader. Sometimes I just feel like reading something that I want to simultaneously throw against the wall and clutch to my chest.

Plus I am such a huge fan of historical romance that I want to read at least many of the older greats. As long as I know what I am getting into I am good.
Just as long as you are prepared you should be okay then. Have you read Stormfire by Christine Monson ? OMG it's the most memorable book I have ever read. I don't think we will ever see her books in ebook. She passed away a long time ago and was quite upset years later she written them but if you ever get your hands on a copy it's well worth it.
