Personally I think my iPad is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Granted it can't replace my desktop but for 95% of things I get online for it does and it's much easier and faster to use. Probably for 95% of things I use a computer for its easier and faster than my desktop.
As far as typing goes, yes a full size keyboard and mouse is better than a touchscreen and or an add on keyboard but it gat the job done. As much as I have tried to learn to type I've never picked up the talent so the small keyboard is t much slower than a full size one, my typing still sucks. Though I am in the process of writing a book on my iPad I couldn't do it with just the touch screen.
It's more the Apple infrastructure than being a tablet but it's so nice that anything I type on my phone, iPad or icloud on my PC the changes appear on all three devices.
While I can use it for reading, and I do, if I am going to read a novel I will read it on my DX, even though it's the same weight or heavier than the iPad. I prefer the e ink for longer reading and I prefer a button for page turns.
I'm not sure I get the issue with "gestures". The pinch and expand, scoring up, down and sideways just seem like second nature after all this time and I don't even think about it any more.
While I don't used desktop as much a tablet or laptop won't replace it due to the raw computing power of a quad core processor and separate video card. Along with multiple hard drives with 4tb of storage. Yes a high end laptop could compete with it (maybe) it's just not cost effective IMHO for me.
If I broke or my iPad wore out I would want to replace it right away.
