Android 4.0.4 is two years old already. Not that it matters anything, mind you; as long as applications support it (or support it up to a certain version of the app), and the latest version of Play keeps functioning.

That last point is the stickler. As soon as Play falls behind and the app needs a newer version to verify the license, your e-reader basically falls apart. (Or you need to switch to a free or illegal app....)
Given the rapidly evolving pace of these devices, I'm certainly not going to worry about what could conceivably happen an unknown time in the future. I buy a device for what it'll do now.
