That didn't work either, presumably because I'd already done what they said, not what they meant.

Your guide that you've provided a link to has the same mistake, in step 9.

Okay, so I've deleted the .png files, ejected, unplugged, then searched the library for the word exit, to confirm that they were no longer there. I then copied the contents of that folder back to the root folder of the kobo, ejected and unplugged again.

They still didn't show up on the main screen, as recent files. I searched the library for exit again, and found the exit nickel icon. I opened it. It showed it to me, in glorious big-o-vision. It didn't exit nickel.

I assume the next step is to uninstall Kobo Start Menu and start again from the beginning?
No the "kbmenupngs" folder is what needs to be copied to the "root" not the folder contents. Then, as you are having problems with the process you should
safely eject The usb device and power off your device then power it back on and start Nickel using the options tab in the start menu. That should eventually show your device "Processing" the media files. Once that has happened you can try the "KoboRoot.tgz" file in the "reinstall" folder of the download.

If that doesn't work you should uninstall the mess you have made and start over clean, following the directions.

Luck;
Ken

PS, there are battery monitor scripts in the Start Menu supplied scripts, under "tests" I think.
