Scratches are a secondary concern in this case. You want something rigid to carry it in when it's in a rucksack because twisting will break the glass substrate and kill your reader. A cover may work, but if you can twist it (without the reader in it) you're still a broken screen waiting to happen. A cover will help prevent sharp objects/corners from scratching or point impact breakage, but not from twisting (which you normally don't need to worry about with a phone, tablet, etc. due to their more rigid case and thicker screen.
FWIW I've never had issues with scratches from normal usage, but I keep mine in a wooden case for transport purposes. Never had a cover on any of mine.
