May people save a bit of money and get ahead at les than $12.50 an hour. Many people go farther in debt each year with no assets at 3 times that much.

I've worked at different levels of the wage scale starting at 30 cents an hour and making as much as $120 an hour. The $120 was very nice, but not steady work by any means and the stress level was high. made me pretty crazy and I spent a lot foolishly. Still it accounts for about 1/4 of my retirement savings.

These days I work a menial job for $30-$40 an hour which anyone can get (there are always vacancies where I work and many in the industry) and this type of job has paid of my condo in 7 years and contributed the other 3/4s of my retirement savings. And I actually like the work.

I think $12.50 is a reasonable rate for a starting position requiring few skills. But one can do much better or even much worse. Up to the individual whether they accept the job or not.
