While I understand HarryT's position -- and agree with it, to an extent -- there are practical considerations and limitations, and ways to work within them. I can't justify paying for a professional editor at this stage. If there's no money for it, there's no money for it. But, I did technical editing for years for a former employer and there are some tools that make it a bit easier to edit your own work. Setting it aside to view with "fresh eyes" is one way. Reading it aloud is another. Also, I've been involved with a group of other writers -- we meet weekly and read each others' work.
