Ausbro - What version of calibre are you using - DOCX conversion has been available since version 0.9.34 which was released on June 7 2013, since then there have been 50 new versions, current version is 1.41 released June 21 2014. I use DOCX->EPUB conversion on ~20 publications every day.
I'm not sure which second question you're referring to - if you mean are custom columns, preferences and libraries retained when you upgrade to a later version?
My experience over ~3 years and 100+ upgrades is that all data is always retained.
