If anyone does go the EXTERNAL USB route: be sure to secure all cables into their connectors somehow. USB does not have connector latches. Many External drives use easily detachable power bricks.

IMHO permanent data belongs INSIDE for security. USB is great for temporary (backups).
Remember to store your backup in a cool dry place. Preferably off site (think about the recent California fires or Midwest floods) .
