However if they do choose to edit/add I'm not often if ever interested because I feel like I must be missing something of the original. It's generally different for me when it's a self-pubbed book which gets picked up by a publisher and it goes through an editing process (assuming it didn't when self-pubbed). Another thing I'm not fond of is when the "update" their story to make it feel more modern (add cell phones, kindles, etc).
One solution would be to put out two editions. They already have the original written so go ahead and put that out and then if you want to put out a second edition or special edition with whatever adds/subtracts/updating they want.

I totally agree with you. It be nice to have two, The Original version and then Author's Special Edition or something like that. I would buy the original of course. I have talked to a few authors about this problem and they just don't see it. They have no problem updating or editing their previously published work.
It's like they are embarrassed of the older stuff when I think it's a work of art and you should never mess with art once it's done.
