That vaguely calls to mind something I was taught, many eons ago, in human biology class: that the eye sees light better if you look just to the side of it. Something to do with there being strong light perceptors (are they rods or cones, I can never remember which is which?) in one corner of the retina.

But that was "centuries" ago, so don't quote me.
