I'm seeing references that peguin uses it so I'm going to avoid buying those books on Kobo. I have seen that it's possible to convert them, but it took me long enough to figure out converting the regular epub books.

Not an expert, but AFAIK kepub is only and exclusively used by Kobo. That's why I don't know if it is Penguin's choice to have their books in kepub or is it Kobo's decision.

Yes, only it's not as easy as for epubs. Haven't tried myself, but as far as I understood the resulting file is not same as if you shop for real epub. I guess somebody at Kobo forum would know.
