I can actually see it working the other way, at least for some. This new DRM scheme may not be broken for (weeks? months?). But a new epub reader with the new DRM will read these books just fine. They will also read Amazon books, DRM-stripped. So a person with a new epub ereader can shop wherever they want.
With a Kindle, however, they will only be able to shop with Amazon or with shops that sell DRM-free epubs/etc (or epubs with the older DRM, I suppose, if there will be such a thing).
Please excuse/correct me if I've misread any of the technicalities. Just a thought-bubble!
