Kindle Fire HD?

Yesterday I found myself browsing and looking at the Kindle Fire HD as a possible purchase for my mother. At $119 on sale it was definitely a good deal for a basic "tablet". She is far from a power-user, but also does not use the Amazon environment. Would this be a completely ill-advised purchase for her? Is it useful at all to someone who might just want a tablet to do basic web surfing/email and maybe read the occasional free Kindle book? I read something about it being ad-intensive as well... is this the case?

I know absolutely nothing about Kindle and did have a quick search on here but a bit overwhelmed by all of the threads/information...so I thought I'd just ask for people's general thoughts.
