One suggestion

Hi tomat0man,

I'm not sure if your problem is solved i was just wondering why you hardly try to go this way:
1. converting a .docx document into .html.
2. open .html document and editing it with Sigil.
3. try to fix some issue and hoping this will be finaly a .epub document.

- at which point you wantet to use calibre?!

Well, i suggest you one easier way.
1. You have the .docx document save the file as a .rtf (Rich Text File) on your local harddrive.
2. use calibre to add a new empty book (icon top left corner, red book)
3. find created bookfile and editing Metadata (mark empty book with left click, press Button E or use the 2nd Icon top left corner)
3. Add .rtf File to the book (click right top corner, small red book to add file)
4. converting Book (3rd icon top left corner, brown book convert it to .epub)
5. adding TOC (Table of content) by editing book, selecting converted book press right mous-button choose editing book
6. Menuebar->tool->to create toc
7. editing ebook to your needs, if is necessary
8. save and close the window

Hint: you have to know about HTML and CSS if you want to style a ebook.
If you don't have the knowledge it will be hard to fix or change a ebook. independantly whether you use sigl or calibre.

Befor i post this answer i create a ebook (.epub) exacty how i descirbe it above. I use some random text foundet on the homepage of a news agency. So it worked without any problem. You might have to fix hedding for the toc, who knows.
