It seems to me the HD has more going on as far as third party software. But the difference is probably minimal. Because of the internal card some of the more ambitious users have been able to provide significant hacks to it.

I no longer run the stock firmware UI (called Nickel) but instead have installed the KBMenu, Koreader & Coolreader. I can launch Nickel from KB Menu but rarely ever do. Koreader is a better overall reader. PDF support in the Nickel reader is abysmal. Koreader's pdf support is good. In epubs Nickel does render special characters (like em dash) better than koreader (which totally mangles them) but in general I never leave koreader. Especially since development is ongoing in koreader.

If you're mainly reading epub you can stick with the default firmware. I would but 40% of what I read comes as a pdf. If you do stick with the default firmware then I would strongly recommend learning how to use the bookshelf management feature.

I've found the Android installation lacking although am glad to have it for the rare occasion I need it. It just seems slow and screen refreshes are kind of incomplete.
