Just got a response from Scribd on the Nexus 7/KitKat 4.4.3 issue. It doesn't sound like it's going to be a easy fast fix but here's hoping.

Hi there!
I'm so so sorry for the trouble you're having on Scribd after the Android update. You're not alone. I've had a few other Nexus 7 readers with the same problem. Unfortunately there's nothing that I can do right at this moment to get it working properly but rest assured that the engineers are working on it and trying to figure out a fix for the new Android OS.
I really appreciate you sending the screen shot of how the titles are displaying. It's really helpful to see how the titles look to you so that we can figure out what's going wrong.
We're glad that you've spread the word about Scribd and we'll make sure we do what we can to fix the issue that the update caused. I'll keep you posted on the progress of the fix. I'm hoping that we can figure it out soon for you.
Thank you so much for your patience! In the meantime, it may be possible to read on the mobile website, it does require being connected to the internet to read with us, but it's at least a means to access content while we figure out the app troubles. We're working on it now and we'll fix it as soon as possible.
Best regards,

I'm not sure what she meant by titles but I attached the same screenshot I posted here of the broken formatting.
