Actually Gmail works pretty well. But, you have to set the browser to advanced mode and enable javascript. Once I did that the browser worked much better. I didn't even know about these settings until I got the ebook "The Complete User's Guide to the Amazing Amazon Kindle (The perfect gift and due-diligence tool for prospective Kindle buyers!)" They gave it away free for a few days so I grabbed it.

I'm sure the official answer is yes... but they don't pre-announce. Your best bet is to subscribe to the Kindle blog. It is free in the Kindle store... or you can subscribe with a PC RSS reader.

I am only speculating here, but my supposition is NO WAY. They are not going to change format and orphan all the current Kindle users. However, that doesn't mean they will not change formats. But, I am pretty sure if they do then firmware updates will be provided automatically through Whispernet... and if you redownload the ebooks again they will be in this new format... or perhaps it will support both formats.
Once again, all of the above is speculation. However, it makes sense. The Kindle is a very new device. I am sure there will be updated firmware. I am sure there will be more content added daily. I am also sure there will eventually be a new hard ware version too. That is the way tech works.
