That is why Amazon and Apple use their own DRM, so as not to pay the Adobe tax. I suspect that if publishers got billed for the DRM--instead of consumers--they would have gone DRM-free ages ago.

Apple has to use their own DRM because not all of the eBooks they sell will work outside of iBooks. If Apple sold their eBooks as ePub and expected all of them to work outside of iBooks, then there would be a heck of a backlash at Apple.
Amazon uses their own DRM & format so they can retain 100% control. Same with Apple and iBooks.
