Rakuten and Amazon announce partnership
June 06, 2014 07:41 EDT

Rakuten, parent company of Kobo Inc, an eReader manufacturer and eBook supplier, announces a ground-breaking agreement with Amazon, producer of Kindle eBook readers and supplier of Kindle-format eBooks.

Kobo eReaders will have built-in software to access the Kindle store, cloud, and open Kindle eBooks. Correspondingly, Kindle eReaders will be able to access the Kobo store, logged-in user’s account, and open Kobo kepubs (proprietary Kobo-formatted ePub).

Both Kobo and Kindle eReaders will have the capability of accessing library Overdrive borrowing mechanism in United States and Canada via WiFi without computer intervention. Implementation in other countries is expected.

Spokespersons from both companies hail this initiative as a huge step forward for the consumer, and expect that the expanded market for their eBook stores would benefit both companies.
