Rekindled
So, I had been debating for a while about selling my Kindle and putting the cash toward a PRS-700. I liked the prospect of a better PDF viewer particularly since there are some rather complex PDFs I'd like on an e-reader. I'm still considering getting a Sony but I might just get the PRS-500 for complex PDFs. But getting back to my rekindle, I surmised that (even though it may not be most of the price) I figured the only real advantage Kindle has up against other devices is its whispernet. A function I'd rarely use. Simply because I don't buy enough Amazon books or periodicals and I was not impressed with the browser. Once they offered free New York Times and Wton Post on Amazon till the 6th, I realized that I really do enjoy reading the paper on the Kindle. It also dawned on me, that whether or not there might be some things other ebook readers have up on the Kindle, Amazon has too great a grip on really good industries. Apple is the same way with the iPod/iPhone. The success of these are more because of the affiliations they have. Just like how the first Playstation succeeded, they got licenses to the greatest games of the 90's. For some they even got exclusive rights.
In short, I think I've found a good use for the Kindle now that I use it for periodicals and maybe eventually books. But I've got a couple questions if some of the answers are yes, I think I'd be so satisfied with the Kindle, I'm not even concered about Kindle 2.0. Here goes:
1) E-Mail Interface? I'd like to make more use of the web abilities. Is it plausible to think that Amazon might make a goof e-mail interface for the Kindle that is designed for the Kindle's screen? I find a it bit awkward through the browser. When I say interface, I mean the same way you might have an e-mail app on your PC or Mac.
2) Browser improvement? The browser works well in advanced and default depending on the site, but some things I try to sign in on always fail and that never seems to change.
3) Magazines? Are there more magazines on the way? Any news on this?
4) Obsoleteness? Will there be a new format for ebooks and periodicals with 2.0? Will there be goodies I miss out on as a 1.0 customer?
5) Updates? Are there any updates on the way? Anything promised or rumored? Are those experimental things something that will be improved with software updates or they hardware issues that will never get better on this device?
I don't expect official answers to these questions, but are they plausible or not? Any Kindle experts here?
