I'm a fan of just about every author and piece of work mentioned so far. I will also add Jack Vance, whose works range from old fashioned space opera (The Demon Princes series, and others) to stories of the far future where science borders on magic (The Dying Earth series, and others).

A very good and affordable introduction would be The Jack Vance Treasury. It's about $5, and you can reduce the price if you buy it at Kobo and use a coupon.
