I found it!
In case anyone is following this thread--the app is called Daily Book Deals, and it shows about 5-10 books each day which are deals. You can set specific genres that interest you or set to only receive recommended books. Most days, with my settings, there is at least one free book. In hunting for this app, I tried downloading about 6 different apps, and I can see how some would interest others, but for me this is a "curated" list that is likely to have a book several times weekly that I want. Most deals are for a specified period, usually a week or more, so if you don't check the app daily, you won't miss much.
