I'm not a huge Drake fan in general. There sure are ways to retell old historic episodes and legends in ways that are gripping and original. The pity is that Drake, although he is not exactly a bad writer, has not, in my opinion, mastered them. I thought the occasional vulgar bit fit the setting quite well, and the battle suits were a great idea, but the stories themselves, as well as most of the characters, left me quite cold.
As for the author's notes, I found the bits interesting where he went into detail on the various norse legends he used for his novels. I'm rather less fond of the political editorializing he did in the author's notes for the 2nd and 3rd books. I kinda get where he's coming from, even if I may not agree with his views, but those remarks reveal a fear-based, violent streak that I find deeply off-putting.
I'm not sure how fictitious that example was, but I'm sure things like that have happened, and will happen again.
