Well I have ridden a bus in LA and it seemed reasonably full. But being there as a tourist (6 times), the people I asked about buses were hotel people and tour type people etc. and they all said no one uses the bus or some variant thereof. Just as they said 2 or 3 blocks was too far to walk and I managed to make it without expiring from exertion or sinking into the ground as there were no sidewalks.
Same in Phoenix, Orlando and small cities/towns in Oregon. I was in Johnston city Tennessee and had to get a taxi to cross the street which was more or less like a freeway
Never saw a bus there although I am sure they exist.
