I have the one with the wire and have been to many workshops with the same and have never heard of them breaking. As for your other cutter I'll bet the blade is duller than a butter knife!
The ancient one is very sharp because my father keeps it that way. But it weighs several kilos so not ideal for taking upstairs. Also the ruler is in centimeters whilst for scrapbooking and Project Life I work in inches (a trimmer having both would be ideal for me).

On Amazon are a lot of reviews discussing the broken wire, though it would surprise me if it's because people don't use it properly.

I'm having so much fun with scrapbooking and Project Life, it's just so overwhelming what tools and supplies to get next.
