When I am away from my house, the only eReader I use is the Samsung Galaxy s5. I can carry it in my pocket and its almost as good a tablet as the Kindle Fire HDX. For Bible Studies and Church the s5 is my only choice. Plus, when walking my dog, I carry the s5 in my pocket and play my favorite Amazon music off it. When waiting in offices, I can read all my eBooks on the s5 with the Kindle for Samsung app. It only has one font but its a lot clearer than either the PW 2013 or the HDX 2013. I also use it as white text on a black background.
In fact the s5 keeps my AcroBible tags in alphabetical order while the same AcroBible tags are in random order on my Fire HDX.
I believe the s5 is the largest defacto tablet one can carry in a shirt pocket. I doubt an iPad can fit in a shirt pocket and the iPhones simply have too small a screen. However, for ladies with pocketbooks, the best bet would probably be an iPad Mini or the Fire HDX as long as they don't read in bright sunlight.
I purchased the s5 as a phone but now mostly use it as my tablet of choice. I let my wife use the Kindle Fire HDX to access QVC and do her reading there.
However, most of my reading is by my bay window in the living room with bright sunlight streaming in. That kind of sunlight makes the s5 and HDX USELESS. Thus, the Paperwhite 2013 gets most of my reading there. I also doubt if iPads or iPhones can be used in bright, direct sunlight although others may disagree.
I use the Kindle Fire HDX to read when its a dark cloudy or rainy day by my bay window. The white text on black background is perfect in those conditions.
What is really needed is a 5" screen size tablet with the ability to switch between eInk and LCD screens. If it is also a phone, all the better.
