JD is a Juris Doctor ... a doctorate of laws. Do not confuse that with being a "lawyer." The two things are NOT the same. A doctorate of laws means that you have completed law school. Being a lawyer means that you have passed the bar exam in some jurisdiction.

A person can be a lawyer and not have a JD (in which case they have "read for the bar" and passed the bar exam), or they can have a JD and not have passed the bar in any jurisdiction.

I do not know if Barack Obama passed the bar anywhere. I do know that he has a JD. Abraham Lincoln was a good example of someone who was a lawyer, but who did not have a JD.
