Amazon are interested in selling
content. The reading device is simply the way to do that, which is why it is sold at cost price and is as simple as possible a device. That leaves room in the market for other manufacturers to produce devices with premium features at premium prices. Whether or not such a market actually exists is for those manufacturers to determine, but it's not Amazon's "fault".
