I've seen this with certain books is when there is something wrong with the epub structure: either a faulty TOC; or where the whole book's content is contained in one giant .html file instead of being split up into one file per chapter. If this is the cause then usually an epub->epub conversion in Calibre will fix it, (but make sure you delete the faulty version of the book using the device's "remove" menu option or Calibre's remove book function before sideloading the new fixed vesion.)
