Because the windows.old folder is usually very big, if drive space is limited (which is common on upgraded XP PCs because of their age) it is sometimes deleted by the installer or user to free up drive capacity at the time of the upgrade.

But, in any event, I can't recall for Windows 7 but I suspect it is the same as Windows 8.x in that it removes the windows.old folder after 4 weeks. Also, if you do a disk clean up under administrative tools it may also be deleted.

One of these three things may apply in your case.
