You need to put the png into the same directory that has the .kobo folder in it, not into the .kobo folder. ( in Linux any file or folder/directory that has a name that starts with a dot/period is treated as hidden.) Then you need to let your kobo device's software process the png file, it can't do that if the png file is in a hidden folder. Install guide, with notes explaining all this.
