It doesn't automatically zoom in to page-width in landscape mode, which I feel is just right as this would make text in most standard formats (even textbooks) too large to read comfortably. You have to zoom in as needed. Panning is quick and easy.

However, once zoomed in, you cannot flip to the next page. You have to zoom back out, turn the page, then readjust magnification as needed. This is true for both landscape and portrait modes. Thankfully I rarely find the need to zoom in as the size is just right for me even when reading mostly textbooks and scholarly journals. But hopefully this can still be changed in a future firmware update.

One thing I find annoying though is the inability to shrink the text (or zoom out) from standard view. Once you open a document, it automatically fits to either screen length or screen width, whichever maximum you hit first. This makes the text too magnified sometimes. For example, I've just loaded up a book that's originally 5.8 by 8.9 inches when printed. On the DPT-S1 in portrait mode, the page expands (or scales up) to approximately 7 by 10.625 inches, which is now too magnified for me to really want to read on. I have to remedy this by switching to landscape mode which scales the page down to 5.25 by 8 inches. I know there's a kindle for reading these smaller pdfs but I don't always want to carry both devices at the same time.

Fortunately this is not the case while browsing. You can adjust the default zoom settings to far, medium, or close. I just wish they implemented something similar for reading PDF.

All in all I'm still really positive about the device. Reading on this is lovely - quick page turns, nice contrast, crisp text, ability to open tabs and to annotate with a pen. The design is simple yet elegant, quite a head-turner in some cases. I bought this mainly for the ability to read textbooks and letter-sized PDFs on a paper-like screen, and I feel like this is the best one out there to date.
