Never used the KUAL extension. Just the USE_ALT_FONTS blank folder and a new fonts folder in the main directory and that's it. Now my Kindle updated yesterday and this hack no longer works. The KUAL stuff seems way too complicated.
On a good note, the updates have made the default fonts look a lot better, and the Kindle seems to run faster, and it has that nice flip-through feature.
